Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a roll of sod cover? Anderson Sod covers 10 square feet per roll. They measure 2' x 5'. Each roll comes with about 1/2" of soil for a root base.

How do I figure out the amount of sod I need? Calculate the area you wish to cover by measuring length x width. This is your square footage. Divide your square footage by 10 to determine how many rolls you'll need. Please call ahead with your measurements so we can have your sod cut fresh when you plan to pick it up and install it.

How much sun does sod need? Since our sod is 100% Kentucky Bluegrass, it needs about 50% sunlight during the course of the day to thrive. We also offer a shade tolerant seed called Poa Trivialis that will thrive in 100% shade.

What do I need to do to prepare my area for sod? If there are any weeds or existing grass in the area you'll have to kill them with Round-Up or a comparable chemical. Always follow the directions when using chemicals! Wait for the weeds to die, usually in about 2 weeks, and mow them down. Then, determine what type of soil you have. Clay tends to compact and makes it difficult for new sod to take root. Sandy soils don't hold water for very long so you could run the risk of your sod drying out. In either case, we recommend adding topsoil to your existing soil and working it in with a tiller. This will add porosity to clay and water retension properties to sand. It will also grind up and bury all those dead weeds and grasses. Even if you already have good soil we still recommend tilling it up a bit so the sod can take root more easily. After tilling, rake the area out smooth until you're happy with your final grade.

How heavy is a roll of sod? A normal roll is around 30 lbs. If we've had a lot of rain they can weigh as much as 45 lbs. Please plan accordingly if you plan to pick up your sod. We can usually fit 10-12 rolls in the trunk of a full size sedan. Ford F-150's and Chevy/Dodge 1500 series can usually carry around 50-70 rolls. Check the weight limit on your trailer to make sure it can haul what you need. For larger orders we do offer our delivery service.

How do I lay sod? This is the easy part! Lay it down and unroll it. We suggest using a simple brick pattern so the seams are staggered, making sure to pull the rolls tightly against each other so there aren't any gaps. Our sod cuts easily with utility knives so you can cut it to fit perfectly along driveways, sidewalks, and landscaping. If you're installing sod on a slope steeper than 15 degrees we recommend that you stake it down. Remember, green side up!
